Claremont School of Theology celebrates the diversity of the members of our community and is firmly committed to maintaining a learning and work environment that is free of all forms of discrimination and harassment. As one of the thirteen United Methodist theological schools, CST\u2019s appreciation for and commitment to diversity is grounded within the Christian faith and the United Methodist traditions. The Hebrew Bible tradition teaches that God created humanity in God\u2019s own image (Genesis 1:27). Furthermore, the New Testament tradition affirms that <\/span>“<\/span><\/i>Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body\u2014whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free\u2014and we were all given the one Spirit to drink\u201d (1 Corinthians 12:12-14).<\/span><\/p>

In addition to the biblical instructions, the United Methodist <\/span>Book of Discipline <\/span><\/i>notes that the traditions we root ourselves in \u201c<\/span>underscore the equality of all persons in<\/span> Jesus Christ. They display the capacity of the gospel to free us to embrace the diversity of human cultures and appreciate their values\u201d <\/span>(2020\/2024 <\/span>Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church<\/span><\/i>, \u00b6 105, p. 86), and that \u201c<\/span>In our diversity, we are held together by a shared inheritance and a common desire to<\/span> participate in the creative and redemptive activity of God\u201d (\u00b6 105, p. 89)<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>

The United Methodist Social Principles likewise teaches that \u201cWe affirm our sacred calling to be responsible stewards and to lovingly tend all that God has wrought. We recognize the inherent worth of God\u2019s creation, celebrate earth\u2019s abundance and diversity, and, along with the entirety of the cosmos, give praise to its Creator. We recognize we are interconnected members of complex ecosystems, intricate webs of life, all of which have their origins in God\u2019s gracious act of creation\u201d (<\/span>BOD<\/span><\/i>, \u00b6 160, p. 110). Our Social Principles call for us to support both gender equality and gender diversity (<\/span>BOD, <\/span><\/i>\u00b6 162, p. 129) and to \u201ccondemn racism, ethnocentrism, tribalism, and any ideology or social practice based on false and misleading beliefs or ideologies that one group of human beings is superior to all other groups of human beings. Additionally, we utterly reject laws, policies and social practices that marginalize, discriminate and\/or encourage the use of violence against individuals, communities or other social groups based on perceived racial, ethnic or tribal differences\u201d (<\/span>BOD<\/span><\/i>, \u00b6 162, p. 133).<\/span><\/p>

Grounded in the biblical, theological, and denominational traditions, the School prohibits discrimination in the administration of its educational policies, admission policies, financial aid, employment or any other School program or activity based on an individual\u2019s race, color, creed, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, or related medical conditions), gender (including gender identity and expression), age, sexual orientation, national origin (which includes language use and protected use of a driver\u2019s license issued to undocumented persons under California Vehicle Code section 12801.9), ancestry, religion (including all aspects of religious belief, observance, and practice including religious dress and grooming practices), marital or registered domestic partner status, military and service\/veteran status, physical or mental disability, medical condition (including cancer or a record or history of cancer, and genetic characteristics, ), genetic information, or any other legally protected class (collectively referred to as \u201cprotected characteristics\u201d or \u201cprotected class\u201d).<\/span><\/p>

The School also does not tolerate harassment of any kind based on any of these protected characteristics and prohibits discrimination and harassment based on the perception that someone is a member of a protected class.<\/span><\/p>

The School makes good faith efforts to recruit, employ and promote qualified minorities, women, individuals with disabilities, and veterans. It admits qualified students to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students.<\/span><\/p>
