At an unlikely moment for theological education, something surprising is happening at Claremont.<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\n

There is a surprising story happening at our very own Claremont School of Theology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a time when many seminaries and graduate schools are struggling to attract students, CST is experiencing remarkable success in recruitment. Recent enrollment growth has exceeded expectations, placing CST among the leaders in student recruitment growth across the 13 United Methodist seminaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the surface, this might seem like an unlikely moment for such growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across the country, long-assumed freedoms are being questioned. Efforts to foster diversity and inclusion have become targets of political attack. LGBTQ+ people once again find their dignity and safety debated in public. Religious pluralism is sometimes treated with suspicion rather than curiosity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of the principles CST has embraced for decades are now described in some circles as radically progressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet students are coming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the real surprise is that we are not surprised.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students do not pursue theological education in a vacuum. They come with questions.  How should faith respond when people are pushed to the margins? What does spiritual leadership look like in a polarized culture? Can religious communities become places of healing rather than division? How do we create genuine belonging across the differences that too often separate us?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a growing number of students, these are not secondary questions. They are the reason to study theology at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CST is a Christian seminary affiliated with The United Methodist Church. Its identity is rooted in the Christian tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, CST is deeply interreligious, as reflected in its Jain studies program with Arihanta Institute and its Islamic studies program with Bayan Islamic Graduate School. Students from different religious traditions\u2014and those who encounter faith in different ways\u2014study alongside one another. They learn not by minimizing their differences, but by engaging them honestly and respectfully. Christian identity and interreligious education are not competing commitments at CST. Together, they prepare students to lead in a diverse world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CST offers a place where difficult questions can be examined honestly. Students are not required to leave their identities, experiences, traditions, or intellectual curiosity at the door. The school\u2019s core principles of compassion, justice, and belonging are more than institutional language. They shape how students learn, whom they learn beside, and the communities they are preparing to serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the numbers.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between Fall 2022 and Fall 2025, CST\u2019s new student enrollment increased by 52% and total enrollment rose by 27% , reversing a difficult period and signaling renewed momentum. Student retention has also remained above 90 percent since 2020, reaching 96 percent in Fall 2024. Students are not only finding CST, they are choosing to remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The school\u2019s reach has changed as well. Flexible learning makes a CST education possible for students who cannot relocate to Southern California. International partnerships and developing programs are bringing new voices into the community. Classrooms now connect people across geography, culture, religious traditions, and lived experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A deeper reason may be that students are finding a sense of purpose at CST.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students are looking for an education that prepares them for the world as it is while helping them imagine the world as it could be. They want serious scholarship and the courage to apply it. They also want to explore how God may be calling them to serve in a world that urgently needs healing and courageous leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At CST, the principles of compassion, justice, and belonging give that calling a particular shape. Some students are preparing for ministry or counseling. Others are called to teaching, scholarship, community organizing, or other forms of leadership. All are gaining knowledge and practical tools to put their convictions into action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CST occupies a unique space.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

None of this means the school is without challenges. Growth brings its own demands, and CST continues the careful work of strengthening its programs and supporting its students while also trying to build a secure financial future. But recruitment success offers something more than encouraging statistics. It is evidence that CST\u2019s mission continues to speak to people discerning how they are called to serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
