A Joint Statement from the Presidents of Claremont School of Theology and Bayan Claremont:
We hereby register our profound disappointment in the U.S. Supreme Court’s majority opinion in United States v. State of Hawaii to uphold the travel ban targeting Muslim-majority countries. We believe that deference to the executive branch of government on this matter is an abdication of the duties of the judicial branch to serve as a check on authoritarian policies and to protect and uphold the spirit of the Constitution.
As people of faith, we are undeterred in our work for justice, bold in our prayers for one another, and steadfast in our belief in the American people. As with prior short-sighted decisions that perpetuate injustices, such as Jim Crow laws, the Chinese Exclusion Act, and the internment of Japanese Americans, we maintain faith that our fellow citizens will recognize that as a nation, our vision is expansive and encompassing, and we can do better.
