Last month, Sojourners told us what we already know: Rev. Dr. Monica Coleman is a woman to watch! Sojourners, a publication dedicated to the relationship between faith and politics, social justice, and peace, named Dr. Coleman one of ten Christian women to watch in 2018. Every International Women’s Day, Sojourners publishes a list of women who are “making and shaping history.” Sojourners chose Dr. Coleman in part for her work on mental health, religion, and sexual and domestic violence. Dr. Coleman said, “It is a deep honor to be among some of the other amazing women Sojourners recognizes. In the last three years, I’ve traveled around the country talking about mental health and faith. There was a huge stigma against this years ago, but I’m overjoyed to see so many churches and clergy committed to learning more, breaking silences and supporting their communities.”
Dr. Coleman’s latest book, Bipolar Faith, has also garnered national attention:
- Cornel West said, “Monica Coleman is a courageous and brilliant theologian whose wisdom and rigor helps sustain many of us. This unique and pioneering book opens a new spiritual zone for our serious attention!”
- Rachel Held Evans called her book a “stunning, unforgettable read” saying, “Bipolar Faith grabs you with the first exquisitely composed paragraphs and won’t let you go until the final page is turned. Even then, its impact lingers. To say this is a book about mental health severely limits its scope, which includes arresting reflections on race, womanhood, death, love, sex, community, and joy. A master storyteller, Coleman seamlessly knits together the personal and universal, the particular and the communal. Hers is one of the clearest and most compelling voices in Christian literature today. Let those with ears hear.”
Dr. Coleman’s book is available at major retailers, and the full Sojourners story can be found at https://sojo.net/articles/2018-s-10-christian-women-watch.
