Dr. Lucy Jones

Dr. Lucy Jones is a seismologist, founder of the nonprofit Dr. Lucy Jones Center for Science and Society that supports the application of science in the creation of more resilient communities, and a research associate in the Seismological Laboratory at Caltech.

With a BA in Chinese Language and Literature from Brown University, and a Ph.D. in Geophysics from MIT, she was a geophysicist with the US Geological Survey at Caltech for 33 years, developing methodologies for short term earthquake advisories and integrated disaster scenarios, including the “Great ShakeOut” scenario and drill. She is the author of The Big Ones: How natural disasters have shaped us (and what we can do about them), published by Doubleday in 2018, creator of the “Great ShakeOut” drill and cohost of the podcast, Getting Through It.

Awards have included the Service to America Medal in 2015, AGU’s Gilbert White Lecture in 2018 and Gutenberg Lecture in 2023, public service awards from the major American geoscience professional societies (AGU, GSA, SSA, AGI), and the Freedom of Information Award from the Radio and Television News Association. She is also a musician, performing on the viola da gamba with Los Angeles Baroque and SoCal Viols, and composed music on climate change, In Nomine Terra Calens.
