This program is specifically designed for Korean and Korean American religious professionals who work in Korean or other intercultural contexts. Faculty from CST and other Korean and Korean American scholars from other theological schools have been brought together to teach in this program. This program arises from the contemporary Korean and other intercultural ministry contexts in which rapid social changes result in many forms of individual, familial, congregational, and social conflicts. The prevalence of such conflicts in Korean and Korean American society results in the current burgeoning “industry” of counseling and healing ministries in Korean communities. Many Korean churches, however, adopt traditional forms of healing ministry such as revivals, retreats, and worship services. These tend to be highly individualistic without accounting for the larger sociocultural context out of which these conflicts arise. This DMin program, therefore, emphasizes contextual analyses. It presents a critical and systematic understanding of conflicts and healing, a critical reflection of the interface between theory and praxis, and acquisition of integrated practical and theological skills and competence.
The DMin includes the equivalent of two full years of academic study (7 courses for 28 credits) plus the DMin Project Writing and Completion (2 credits). The Project will address both the nature and practice of ministry. It will be required to be of sufficient quality that it contributes to the practice of ministry as judged by professional standards and has the potential for application in other contexts of ministry. The degree must be completed within 5 years.

실천신학 목회학 박사과정: 한국 사회 내의 갈등의 치유와 변혁을 위한 실천신학 목회학 박사과정 학위 프로그램은 특별히 한국 사회나 문화 간 사회에서 전문적으로 기여할 한국인과 한국계 미국인을 위하여 디자인되어 있습니다. 강의는 클레어몬트 신학대학원의 전문 교수진, 타 신학교에서 교육하는 한국인 교수, 그리고 한국계 미국인 교수들이 수업을 진행합니다. 실천신학 목회학 박사과정 프로그램은 개인, 가정, 회중, 그리고 사회적으로 많은 갈등을 일으키며 급격히 변화하는 한국 사회의 상황과 다른 문화 간 사역의 현장에서 연구 질문을 시작합니다.
한국 사회와 한국계 미국인 사회에서의 갈등 들은 오늘날 한국 커뮤니티 안에서 “산업적인” 상담과 치유 사역의 급격한 상승을 불러 일으켰습니다. 하지만, 많은 한국 교회들은 부흥회나 수련회, 그리고 예배와 같은 전통적인 치유의 형식으로 다양한 갈등들을 해소해왔습니다. 이러한 현상들은 갈등의 근원을 보지 못할 뿐 아니라 보다 결국 큰 사회적 상황을 돌보지 못하는 강도 높은 개인주의적 성향을 여실히 보여 줍니다. 그러므로, 클레어몬트 실천신학 목회학 박사과정은 오늘 우리가 살아가는 현장과 구체적인 상황에 대한 분석을 무엇보다 강조합니다. 실천신학 목회학 박사과정은 연구자에게 갈등과 치유에 관한 비판적이며 조직적인 이해를 요구하며, 당면한 이론과 실제 사이의 비판적 성찰, 그리고 실제적인 신학적 관점과 그 사유의 해석을 통합하여 적용하도록 전체 연구 과정을 지원합니다. 전체 연구 과정이 2년인 실천신학 목회학 박사과정 은 2년의 학문적 프로그램, 즉 7개의 강의(28학점: 필수과목 1개, 선택과목 6개)와 2학점의 The DMin Project Writing and Completion을 이수하면서 Professional Research Project (전문 연구 프로젝트)를 완성하도록 타임라인이 구성되어 있습니다(총 30학점). 프로젝트는 사역 현장의 본질과 실제 모두를 실천신학 관점에서 연구하여 작성하게 될 것입니다. 또한, 프로젝트는 전문적인 기준에 의하여 평가될 것이며, 연구자가 프로젝트에서 염두 한 특수한 청중뿐만 아니라 다른 사역의 장소에도 적용 가능하고, 기여할 수 있는 충분한 프로젝트의 내용과 질을 연구자에게 요청할 것입니다.
Core Courses – 6 credits
Practical Research Project Methodology 4 credits
The DMin Project Writing and Completion 2 credits
(may be taken for 2 credits in one semester or 1 credit over 2 semesters)
The Project shall include the following:
- The Project must reflect the student’s depth of practical theological insight in relation to ministry.
- It must demonstrate the student’s ability to identify a specific practical theological topic in ministry around the theme of
- healing and transformation of conflict.
- Students must utilize an effective research model, use appropriate resources, and evaluate the results.
These Project parameters will be introduced in the required course, Context of Ministry and Project. Students will be encouraged to identify a Project topic within the first year of coursework and engage in peer review conversation during Orientation. Preparation for the Project will be addressed in all courses. Courses will prepare students to identify research problems and questions, understand theoretical perspectives, access relevant literature, and identify connections to the practice of ministry. Students are expected to integrate coursework, clinical and ministerial training, and ministry experiences in the culminating Project.
The curriculum includes a required course that will help students learn research methods and design (Contexts of Ministry and Project). In this course students will develop a draft Project proposal through a peer-review process with supervision from the faculty. The final assignment of the Contexts of Ministry
is completion of a 24-page proposal that will include:
- A statement of the problem or issue in the practice of ministry that is to be the subject of the culminating Project.
- A description of the context of the problem in the practice of ministry.
- The justification for the study: the need for it and the contributions it will make.
- Background information on the problem to be addressed.
- An explanation of the theoretical stance of the student-researcher.
- A discussion of appropriate research methods for the evaluation of the Project.
- A detailed tentative outline.
- A preliminary bibliography.
The Project is neither a PhD dissertation nor a simple research paper. Students are to select a Project topic in their own ministry context. They must address the implications of their findings for the practice of ministry. The Project will be between 60-90 pages excluding Table of Contents, Bibliography, and Appendices (charts, graphs, etc.). If written in Korean, students must prepare a 3-5 page abstract and summary in English, which is bound with the Project.
목회학 박사과정 논문 프로젝트
논문 프로젝트는 다음의 항목들을 반드시 포함해야 합니다:
- 논문 프로젝트는 사역과 관련하여 학생들의 실천신학적인 통찰력의 깊이를 반영해야 합니다.
- 논문 프로젝트는 갈등의 치유와 변화를 주제로 사역의 구체적인 실천신학적 과제를 밝혀내는 학생들의 능력을 논증해야 합니다.
- 학생들은 효과적인 리서치 모델과 그에 합당한 자료들을 활용해야 하며, 그 결과들을 평가해야 합니다.
논문 프로젝트의 한계들은 필수 과목인 목회 상황과 프로젝트(Context of Ministry and Project)
강의를 통해 안내 받게 될 것 입니다. 학생들은 1년차 교과과정(coursework) 기간 안에 논문 주제를 탐색하게 될 것이며, 오리엔테이션 기간 동안 동료들의 검토와 토론에 참여하게 될 것 입니다. 논문 프로젝트를 위한 프리젠테이션은 모든 강의들 안에서 다루어질 것입니다. 강의들은 학생들로 하여금 연구 문제들과 질문들의 탐색, 이론적 관점들의 이해, 연관된 문학 서적들에 접근, 그리고 사역의 실천을 위한 연속적인 탐색을 위하여 준비할 것 입니다. 학생들은 교과과정, 임상과 사역적 훈련, 그리고 사역 경험들을 그 논문 프로젝트 안에 통합할 수 있어야 합니다.
커리큘럼은 학생들로 하여금 연구 방법론 (Research Methods)과 목회 상황을 이해하고 프로젝트를 쓰는 방법을 습득할 수 있도록 돕는 필수 과목들을 포함하고 있습니다. 이 필수 과목들 안에서, 교수진의 감독과 동료 검토의 과정을 통하여 학생들은 논문 프로젝트의 초안을 발전시킬 것입니다. 논문 프로젝트 세미나의 마지막 과제는 24페이지의 논문 계획(proposal)을 끝마치는 것입니다. 논문 계획은 다음을 포함합니다:
- 최종 논문 프로젝트의 주제가 될 수 있는 사역 현장의 문제 또는 쟁점에 관한 진술
- 문제의 배경이 되는 사역 현장에 대한 묘사
- 연구를 위한 정당성: 왜 이 연구가 필요한가? 누구에게 기여할 것인가?
- 논문 프로젝트에서 논의 되어질 문제에 대한 배경 지식
- 학생 연구자의 이론적 입장에 대한 설명: 어떠한 이론을 갖고 프로젝트를 진행하는가
- 논문 프로젝트의 평가를 위한 알맞은 연구 방법론의 토론
- 자세하고 잠정적인 논문 개요
- 예비 참고 문헌 목록
목회학 박사과정 논문 프로젝트는 철학박사학위 논문도 아니고, 간단한 연구 페이퍼도 아닙니다. 학생들은 자신들의 사역 현장에서 특정한 프로젝트 주제를 선정할 것입니다. 학생들은 사역 현장에서 그들이 새롭게 찾은 발견들과 그것이 함축하는 영향 또는 결과에 대해 분명히 밝혀야 합니다. 프로젝트는 목차, 참고문헌, 부록 (차트, 그래프 등)을 제외하고 60-90페이지가 되어야 할 것입니다. 만약 한국어로 논문 프로젝트를 진행할 시, 학생들은 논문 프로젝트에 반드시 3-5 페이지의 영문 초록을 첨부해야 합니다.
